It was a late September afternoon on the east side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was rut season and the thrilling sound of elk bugling rang out from time to time. I got word that one was on the other side of the nearby Oconaluftee River and seemed like he might be about to cross. When he was almost directly opposite me, a rival called, and the one I was watching lifted his head looking right at me and let out a mighty response. I am so happy I was able to record it to share with all who love the Smokies and the magnificent wildlife.
