This image was made on a November morning on the Foothills Parkway in East Tennessee. My intent had been to photograph a foggy sunrise over the mountains, but the fog thickened just then until I could only see a few yards. Peering through the mist in the special quiet that fog seems to bring, I saw a colorful undergrowth dominated by the white tree trunk create a strong diagonal element in an otherwise chaotic scene.
